Natural Dye and Shibori Workshop
Learn about the basics of shibori, an ancient form of Japanese dyeing with Kalen Kaminski of Upstate.
We will be making dyes with accessible materials found in your kitchen and garden such as cochineal (insects!), avocado pits, madder root, sandal wood, charcoal, squid ink, beets and turmeric. Not only will we learn to use natural dyes, but each student will make their own dye satchel to bring home and use on their own (think of a 5”x5” tea bag). Students will learn about colors and experiment with making their own. We will provide a raw silk hankie to work with, but everyone is welcome to bring whatever they want to dye that’s a natural fiber (cotton, silk, linen, wool, etc.).
